\n\uf0d8 Liver infection transmitted mainly via fecal-oral contact (i.e. poor
\nhand washing after contact with anus\/feces or oral-anal sex –
\n\u201crimming\u201d). The organism must be ingested in order to infect.
\n\uf0d8 HAV can be asymptomatic or can cause the same symptoms
\nas HBV and HCV. Usually HAV infections self-resolve and it
\nseldom causes the kinds of serious consequences as with HBV
\nor HCV.
\n\uf0d8 Once a person has developed antibodies for HAV they are
\nimmune for life.
\n\uf0d8 There is a vaccine for HAV (series of 2 shots).
\n\uf0d8 Use of latex gloves or dental dams for rimming can reduce
\nchances for transmission of HAV.
\n\uf0d8 The three types of Hepatitis mentioned (A, B & C) are not
\nclosely related viruses \u2013 their main commonality is that they
\nattack the liver.
\nSome viruses like HBV and HAV are usually more acute infections,
\nmeaning they only affect the body for a short period of time (under 6
\nmonths) before they self-resolve.
\nOther viruses are chronic infections that can remain in the body and
\naffect organs, tissues or cells for a long time. If someone has a
\nchronic STD infection, they can pass it to others.
\nSome viruses, like HSV, have acute symptoms (outbreaks with sores)
\nthat come and go, but the virus itself is in the body for life, and is,
\ntherefore, chronic.
